Maintaining A Central Air Conditioning System

Monday 1 December 2008 @ 10:41 am

By correctly maintaining your system you can be assured that it will work longer as well as more efficiently, costing you less in both repair and power bills even as the unit ages.

All central air conditioning units have two separate and different components that are equally important in the functioning and efficiency of the system. The part that is outside is the condenser unit and while it is a sealed unit, it does tend to collect debris, dirt and organic material. Keeping the condenser clean and free from these items will help with air movement across the condenser coils, making the unit work more efficiently. Some of the basic maintenance that should be done before using the unit for the first time in the spring or summer include cutting down all weeds, grass or bushes that may be drawn into the unit by the fan or may stop the flow of air to the fan. In addition commercial condenser coil should be used to clean the coil prior to the first use. The fins, the small aluminum pieces around the unit, need to be carefully cleaned with a soft brush or a special fin cleaner. Don’t use water as this can cause the debris to turn into mud and may damage or bend the soft metal the fins are made of.

Metal Recycling from Home

Monday 1 December 2008 @ 9:45 am

If you want to make money by recycling metal, you can opt to collect a lot of aluminum cans. You can also opt to choose metals that have greater value. These materials will yield more money per pound and they usually take up less volume.

Non-ferrous metals tend to be worth more at a metal recycling plant. You can expect a nice return for your old washing machine and if you have a spare steel beam, you might as well make some money by recycling it. However, these items will yield less money per pound.

What is Global Warming a Question our Ancestors Never had to Ask?

Sunday 30 November 2008 @ 1:51 pm

The earth is off its natural course and is warming up much faster than it should; causing many scientists and environmentalists alarm. Global warming is a cause for concern because it can and will destroy the quality of life that humans, animals, insects, and plant life have known for centuries. Global warming if not eradicated can alter our genetic or physical make up or, in the worse cause scenario render our planet totally inhabitable.

Effective Control of Water Pollution

Sunday 30 November 2008 @ 1:20 pm

Water is a free natural resource for everyone, with water pollution considered as any change in the natural composition of water due to any type of human activity that formed the pollution. The majority seems to be caused by polluting a substance which at first does not seem offensive at all, or even harmful, yet eventually develops into it. The pollutants involved are either toxic or non-toxic, depending on what they are—food production waste, industrial toxics, manure slurry, or silage effluent—but the results will be the same when they end up in large bodies of water. With water considered a vital aspect to the planet, the long process of effective control of water pollution has been around awhile, beginning with the Water Pollution Control Ordinance and its ongoing series of amendments—with the same goal of control of water pollution.

Concern in the United States over water pollution dates back to the 1899 Federal Rivers and Harbors Act—the Refuse Act—which prevents any refuse disposal from entering any lakes, navigable rivers, streams, or any other body of water without a permit. In 1948 the Water Pollution Control Act gave the Surgeon General authority to reduce water pollution, with water being considered contaminated when it was unfit to support human life and is impaired by anthropogenic contaminants. To maintain the control of water pollution, this act was established to regulate the pollutant discharges into the U.S. waters, regulating the standards for quality surface waters. Implementing specific water pollutant programs, a water quality standard was developed for all surface water contaminants—beginning with setting industry standards for wastewater—making it illegal to allow any point-source pollutant enter navigable water without a permit.

Alternative Energy Technologies

Tuesday 4 November 2008 @ 7:43 am

Alternative energy is defined as energy that comes from a natural source and is renewable or naturally occurring. Alternative energy typically does not produce pollution and comes from such sources as the sun, wind, and water. There have been many recent innovations to alternative energy as a result of expanding alternative energy technologies.

Here are another resources for Alternative Energy Technologies

Are Homemade Wind Power Generators Feasible?
By Darrel Case

Although wind power generators have been around for over a hundred years, it never quite caught on. It’s still not a mainstream source of power today but soaring energy costs and the eco-effects of conventional energy waste of late have forced a surge of interests in alternative renewable energy. Along with solar power panels, windmills can now be seen mushrooming across the country and have proven to be a viable source of energy as long as the territory is endowed with the required natural conditions.

Wind Power Generators
As depicted in the name, the function of wind power generators is to produce power by utilizing the wind as fuel. This is obviously beneficial as wind is natural, free and unlimited in supply. Having that said, it is not always feasible or viable. For example, the wind resource in the locality must be of a certain level and the wind tower or structure must not pose any detriment to the surrounding. And are they cost-effective over the conventional form of power?

The operation of the wind power generator can be simplistically described within the theory of the Conservation of Energy. Kinetic energy of the wind or airflow is harnessed by the rotor blades into mechanical energy as the spindle is turned. The rotary force of the spindle is utilized in windmills to drive pumps and other mechanical systems directly or is further converted via a turbine into electrical energy. This power can be consumed on the fly or stored for later use.

A wind power home is a noble proposition these days but there are criteria to be fulfilled. Ideally, the house sits on a good-sized plot in a relatively spaced-out rural or sub-urban neighborhood. Surrounding wind resource is steady and even. The tower height of the wind system is functionally adequate and is in compliance with building requirements, along with other neighborhood aspects such as noise, endangerment and other hazards or inconveniences. The local supply grid also supports the interconnection of excess power for reverse credit or sale.

Even with the advancement of technology in this field, it is hardly practical to live off-grid with wind power as the sole source of power for your home. No matter what, the elements will never be 100 percent predictable and that’s why it’s most suitably used as a mutually complementary source of energy with solar power which will also endure crunch spells. Nevertheless, it’s greatly beneficial even if it’s deployed only as a supplementary supply to the power grid.

It’s not rocket science to make wind power. There is plenty of information and literature at your finger tips over the internet. A handful of those DIY handbooks actually do a very neat job in guiding even the totally uninitiated to construct their own wind power generators from scratch. It’s possible to not only slash your power bills but also get paid for the excess that is channeled back onto the utility grid. On top of that, there’s the feeling of gratification from knowing that you have contributed to the green movement.

Labor Day Not Cancelled for HHO Drivers

Wednesday 27 August 2008 @ 3:14 pm

Fewer Americans will be traveling this Labor Day according to AAA. In fact, they estimate we’ll travel less than we have in the last eight years. That follows the trends set by lower 4th of July and Memorial Day travel too. But there’s one group of people who have not been hampered by gas and diesel prices. Read why they’ve turned to HHO fuel to avoid the pain at the pump at www.gas2o.com.
