Kitchens and Restoration in Vintage Homes

Posted in General on July 21st, 2008

Cabinets, more than any other single element in the design, determine the look and feel of a kitchen. To give a kitchen a historic feeling, designers caution against filling the kitchen with modern built ins. Architectural salvage companies often stock vintage cabinets in wood or metal. These cabinets mix well with freestanding antique or reproduction pieces. An antique dresser or a dry sink adds charm as well as semi-customized items like plate racks and open shelving. Painted wood cabinets may warp when stripped so be advised to try one cabinet door first. Metal cabinets should be stripped, buffed, and lacquered to prevent them from rusting.

Stone countertops are compatible with old-fashioned kitchens as long as the stone is honed to a soft finish not sleek and modern. Vermont soapstone is one popular choice.

For flooring, designers usually recommend hardwood. Linoleum, maligned for years, is making a comeback. Unused rolls of vintage linoleum from the ’20s to the ’50s can often be found at salvage companies or at specialty stores.
On the ceiling, pressed metal makes quite a statement, particularly when left in its natural state. As an alternative, try heavy Anaglypta paper, a cream-colored wallpaper embossed in a variety of period patterns. It is less expensive to install than pressed metal and once painted, achieves a much similar effect.

Healthy Lifestyle

Posted in Health Body & Mind on July 21st, 2008

Changing the way you eat is one of the first things you want to consider when thinking about a healthy lifestyle. You don’t have to give up the foods that you love, but you may want to change the way that you prepare them at home. If you love fast food, you will need to find ways to cut back on how many times you eat out and even what choices you make when you roll up to the window to make an order. There are some healthy choices when you must eat on the run, so think about those before you eat that burger and fries that are not always the best choices.

Your new healthy lifestyle should include some exercise. Many groan when they hear this, and think they have to join a gym or put a treadmill in their bedroom. The truth is that most who join a gym quit within a month, and treadmills often become just another piece of furniture. Instead, think about things you may like to do instead. Walking and even hiking are great ways to add exercise to your new healthy lifestyle. Hobbies and sports are much better additions when you want to get up and move, as they are more satisfying for both body and mind.

Smoking and drinking can get in the way of your choice to live a healthy lifestyle as well. Smoking should be stopped as soon as possible, and drinking should be cut down substantially. You might also want to think about some of your personal relationships. If you have friends that cause you quite a bit of stress, they can derail your plans without you realizing what they are doing. They don’t mean to do it, but their stress and negative energy can bring you down as well. Try to surround yourself with positive people, and also try to cheer those around you who are prone to being negative.

Boutique Clothing Shops

Posted in Shopping on July 21st, 2008

Most women enjoy new additions to their wardrobe on a rather regular basis. Sooner or later, your enthusiasm for clothes shopping may wane when you shop at the mall time and time again. The fashions start to have a sameness that is uninspiring. You long for something really different, in clothes, shoes and other accessories. If you’re not familiar with the boutique clothing shop experience, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Give your sister or girlfriend a call and plan a Saturday shopping trip cruising the boutique shops. Go out for lunch and make a day of it.

Unlike the department stores, where buyers go for the mass fashion trends, boutique clothing shop owners may travel the world looking for unusual trends and ethnic clothing and accessories of high quality and with an undeniable fashion quotient. These shop owners are often quite discerning, artistic individuals who can spot a beautiful garment that will sell to a discerning clientele. That would be you.

Although you may pay a bit more for some of these goods, they’re worth the price. High quality materials last. The design and cut of these fashions are out of the ordinary, without being outlandish. Attention to detail is apparent. You’ll find that many of the clothing items are handmade or have hand-sewn detailing. Boutique clothing shop owners are also incredibly talented in matching up shoes, jewelry, handbags, hats and all of the other accessories you might put together with that fabulous dress. You’ll surely not find such hand picked items at the mall.
